Today, the smartphone contains a good part of your life, your bank account, your photos or even your messages. If you change your phone regularly, or if you lose your phone, it may be worthwhile to find all these valuable data, whether you’re SMS, emails or holiday movies. Here’s how to back up your data simply on Android.
Today, there are different ways to back up your Android data: either through third-party apps available on the Google Play Store (and not just Google Photos), or thanks to Android itself that restores its apps installed on a mobile or other Android device. Let’s start with a brief explanation of the system set up by Google.
Android Lollipop and Data Recovery
When you turn on your phone on Android Lollipop for the first time, the system will ask you to sign in to your Google Account. Once this is done, the mobile will ask you from which device previously connected to the same account you want to perform the data restore. You will then be asked to select which applications to synchronize. Second interesting point, some applications also back up data, a choice made by the developer when designing its application. Bank applications do not back up data, for example.
To activate the automatic data backup function, simply go to the settings of your mobile, then “personal” and activate “Backup my data” – the labels may differ depending on the mobile. On Samsung devices, for example, you can find a “Backup and Reset” category, which allows you to manage the backup of your data by your Google and Samsung accounts.
Once enabled, you will be offered to restore your previously installed applications to your new mobile every time you connect a new device to your Google Account.
Android Third-party applications
On Android, there are multiple applications to back up your data. The features also change if your device is rooted or not. We chose two applications: My Backup and Helium (formerly Carbon). For this comparison, we opted for free versions of these applications.
The MyBackup application is available in two versions on the Play Store, free and paid (3.98 euros). In its free version, it allows you to back up your applications and data, SMS / MMS, call log, contacts, alarms as well as system parameters and layout of your various offices. With this application, it is not necessary to have a computer on hand since everything is done from the phone. It is recommended that you keep a copy of the backup on your computer in case of theft or breakage.
Once the application is downloaded and launched, simply click on “New Backup” and then select “Applications & Media” to save your applications, photos, music and videos. It is also possible to set up scheduled backups. At first glance, the app has everything to be the best app available on the Play Store. Only, if you back up your data and want to reinstall them on another phone, it will be mandatory to use the Premium application. It will not be possible to export your data without going through the checkout. However, if you reset your phone, you can restore your data to the same phone without going through the paid version. It is a pity that the application does not directly warn us of this fact.
Helium is developed by the Clockworkmod team. The application is also available in two versions: one free, and the other paying (3.71 euros). It allows you to back up your applications and their data. Unfortunately, Helium cannot save photos, contacts, MMS and builders applications. When the application is first launched, it is also necessary to have a computer on hand and to install software available on the developer’s website. But it is one of the best software available on the Play Store to back up your applications on Android. We had a test of the application available at this address .
For people who want to back up their SMS and MMS messages, the SMS Backup & Restore application fulfills its role perfectly. It is available free on the Play Store. Its use is very simple, once launched simply click on “Save ” and then choose the folder where you want your backup to register. To restore your missives, just click on “Restore” then select the file previously saved, pasted into the memory of your new phone.
Note that this application will be useless if you use Hangouts as messaging, since the system saves all of your conversations.
Manufacturers also offer tools to back up your data. Some even offer to transfer data between two phones. Convenient when you just purchased a new phone, or for people switching from iOS to Android.
For owners of Samsung devices, the Korean manufacturer has introduced a new tool called SmartSwitch . It allows you to save all your data, and to restore them simply. It is also with SmartSwitch that you can update your mobile. For once, the software is very light in comparison to the Kies gas plant. Another point, the solution is also able to copy data from an iPhone to an Android smartphone.
Like its competitor Samsung, Sony also offers its solution to back up its data. It offers applications directly integrated into the phone to perform a complete backup of its data (Applications, SMS, Contact, alarms, settings). On PC, the suite is called “PC Companion”, and offers the possibility to perform a backup and update its mobile. For Macs, the software is called “Bridge for Mac “, it has pretty much the same features as its Windows declination. Good point, transferring music from iTunes software is possible. Other interesting features for switchers between Android and iPhone, Sony made possible the transfer of data between the two mobile OS.
HTC also offers applications specific to its Sense 7 overlay to back up its data directly on its mobile. Like Samsung and Sony, the Taiwanese has a home-made solution. HTC Sync Manager allows you to synchronize your smartphone with your computer. Like the previous solutions, the backup of mobile data can be copied to your computer. The transfer of iOS to Android is also part of the game.
You will have understood the data backup on Android can be carried out in multiple ways, through third-party applications or directly by the solutions put in place by the manufacturers. We obviously could not talk about the set of solutions, some being specific to root devices, as is Titanium Backup. Do not hesitate to offer us the solutions or applications you use to make this important task faster and less tedious.
